Our Approach

Windstream Condominiums in Denver, Colorado, faced a significant structural challenge when an aging perma crib wood retaining wall began to fail. Limited site access and construction constraints along an adjacent property line complicated the replacement, requiring an alternative approach to conventional retaining wall construction.

Miller Wall Company worked with the condominium association’s board for more than four years to develop a cost-effective solution. An initial gravity retaining wall design was estimated at $1.8 million, prompting the team to explore alternatives that could address the site’s challenges while reducing construction costs.

The GS2 system allowed Miller Wall Company to leave the existing retaining wall in place and construct the new wall directly in front of it, drilling tiebacks through the original structure. This approach eliminated much of the demolition and removal associated with the pressure-treated lumber, reducing labor, hauling, and disposal costs. Additional efficiencies, including reduced excavation, a smaller footing, less material handling, and faster installation, further contributed to the project’s cost savings.

Using the GS2 retaining wall system supported by a helical foundation, Miller Wall Company delivered an engineered solution for approximately $800,000. The result was a $1 million savings for the condominium association compared to the original gravity wall proposal, while addressing the risk of catastrophic wall failure and helping preserve property values.

The project demonstrates how GS2 technology can provide a practical, cost-effective alternative to conventional retaining wall construction, with savings extending well beyond the cost of the wall materials themselves.
